| Event Review - High Performance Websites - a look under the bonnet! |
Posted: 17-Apr-07
A fascinating look 'under the bonnet' of three true ebusiness websites where data and processes are integrated and managed by the system.
Ciaran Crowley of Directa UK showed us the power of his system which links to a legacy, server based back end 'workhorse' which does the job well and did not need replacing the online systems were developed.
The ease of product placement was impressed many when Ciaran showed us how quickly he was able to respond to the recent hot weather by reducing the price of the Desktop fans and have them immediately featured on the Home page.
Ciaran had some good tips on increasing the customer service offered by his website. Directa include the company telephone number on each page which has resulted in many offline sales initiated by the website.
Ciaran then went on to demonstrate the simplicity of optimising various elements of the site using www.instantposition.com which was featured at the eBF DIY SEO events.
Sales over the past 4 months have been increased by 20%.
Next up was Ken Pearce from Vimpex who talked us through the process he completed 6 months ago when various Access databases were integrated into one online system. Download the Vimpex pdf below to see the tips as they will be useful to anyone planning a project on this scale.
Ken is particularly impressed by the email marketing system which has enabled him to segment and target his customers. It is early days for tangible results but already customer service has been significantly improved with quotes being created quicker and the days of failing to quote because a 'Post It' goes missing are over!
We then looked at the booking system and emarketing system used by eBusiness Forum which is a good example of a membership database with full event booking and payment system complete with statistics and email campaign marketing.
Peter Banks opened up a discussion about Payment Service Providers especially in the light of the new Google Checkout launched in the UK this month. We also discussed the pitfalls of online payments and how careful merchants need to be to minimise the occurrence of fraudulent payments.
The event ended with a light lunch. |
